In the Pastobiome project, the microbiota of pastoralist children in the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia is being analyzed. The study is conducted in collaboration with the Jigjiga One Health Initiative (JOHI), a partnership between Jigjiga University, the Armauer Hansen Research Institute, and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute.
The project aims to characterize pathophysiological changes in the gut ecosystem of nomadic pastoralist children of different nutritional states, including the microbiome and carriage of antimicrobial resistance genes. As pastoralists are rarely included in health surveys and follow a predominantly milk-based diet, the study provides unique insights into the gut microbiota and its role in undernutrition.
The Collection contains 340 stool sample backups from this project.
